On the 13th of August 2018, Friends for Life Foundation was represented at the first ever two days Chancellor’s Career Fair held at the University of Nairobi’s main campus.
This was the first of an annual event that brought together government officials, members of the private sector and the academia in an effort to address the skills gap faced by employers when new graduates transition into the employment arena. It was noted that often, it takes close to two years for employers to induct new graduates into their organizations.
The event was graced by Ambassador Dr. Amina Mohammed, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Dr Vijoo Rattansi (Chancellor, UON) and several other dignitaries including industry leaders. It was held at the Manu Chandaria Centre for Performing Arts. The event doubled as the launch of the UON’s Office of Career Services, which is mandated to empower students to make the right career choices, as per the directive made by Ambassador Dr. Mohammed, in one of her first directives as Cabinet Secretary. All 73 Universities and 200 tertiary institutions in the country are required to set up offices of Career Services within this year. During her speech, the Cabinet secretary also mentioned her ministry’s efforts to
Several industry players in Human Resources, IT, Construction, Engineering, Manufacturing and Security and were present, and they offered students an opportunity to apply for employment and internship opportunities within their organizations. Students had opportunities to listen to key players giving them tips on how to have an upper hand in the job market, with interesting topics of discussion, such as “Skills for the future” by Andela, and “Branding for Employment” from I&M Bank, among others.
Friends for life Foundation used this as an opportunity to network and find suitable mentors and coaches for our students and will be keen to develop new strategic partnerships to ensure that our students are kept abreast with the latest hiring trends and benefit from the very best the industry has to offer.
We encourage our students and Alumni to be on the look-out for similar events in their respective colleges and campuses country-wide.
